Our shopping behavior is guided by instincts. In the earlier days of human development, men hunted and women gathered food. A new study says that this influences the way we shop.
Male shoppers go in for the "kill'. They walk into the store, buy what they need, and walk out. Evolutionary psychologist Daniel Kruger, who conducted the study, even suggests that stores should the way they operate for men: "It may be more efficient to have a counter that the guy walks up to, says what he want, and they go get that item from a storage room."
Women, on the other hand, like to have things to search through, feeling the textures and seeing the colors. They pay attention to details in shape or smell. Daniel Kruger tells a personal story from a trip to Prague. As soon as he and his friends arrived, the women had the impulse to go shopping. When they got back, they proudly showed what they had found. Many of their purchases came from stores that had outlets in other countries, but that didn't seem to matter. The women simply enjoyed the experience of browsing the shops.
Of course, not all men and women fit the pattern. Still, perhaps knowing about these differences will prevent an argument the next time you go shopping with your partner.
